Myanmar missed many advances during 50 years of being shut off from the world by the military junta and has been struggling to catch up since an elected government came to power in 2011. After Burma (Myanmar) achieved independence in 1948 its schools were regarded as among the best in Asia. Secondary and tertiary education take place at government schools. In villages, secular schooling often takes place in monasteries. Burmese society has traditionally valued and stressed the importance of education.
